Spot Na Serra Cafe

Spot na Serra, near Querença, is this week’s Spotlight; Adrienne in our office picked this lovely cafe as one of her favourite spots. Opened on 15/09/2023, Apphia and Daniel moved from London to Portugal in December ‘22. They lived in London for many years and both worked in hospitality (Daniel in a wine shop, Apphia in a café), but this is their first time owning their own. Over the years they shared a passion for cafes, scouting them out & planning trips around ones they wanted to visit, so they decided to open one – a place for great coffee amongst beautiful nature.
 
They had been coming to Portugal for 10 years, loved the people, the food, wine & landscapes. They fell for the Algarve and its mountains, at the same time they were tired of city life and the pandemic made them realize they wanted a change. They found their home “Casa de Cantoneiros”, ideal with its enclosed garden for their Clumber Spaniel, Clover, and located on the N2 (the famous national road – the longest in Europe) and the Via Algarviana, with space for a café, and B&B. So they took the plunge.
 
Their customers are varied: cyclists, motorcyclists, hikers, neighbours from surrounding villages, tourists taking a break from the coast & drivers on the N2. With scenic views it’s an ideal stop to add to your cycle route or for a hiking trip! Speaking Portuguese, English, French, Spanish, and Dutch, they have created a place where Portuguese & expats can feel welcome.
 
Their focus is specialty coffee/tea, sourced from Portuguese independent roasters, as well as the Companhia Portugueza do Cha. They’ll be bringing in more roasters in future & always have 2-3 coffees on offer. Offering pastries, cakes, prato do dia (or several), cheese, wine and beer.
 
We asked Apphia and Daniel what they love about the Algarve, they said their location in the stunning Serra do Caldeirão, being 30km from the coast with easy access to São Brás & Loulé, beautiful blue skies, nature, mountains, Ria Formosa, friendly people, and a slower pace of life.
 
Open for Christmas, Boxing Day & New Years. Regular hours are Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday from 9-5, also open public holidays.
